JMW architects has been commissioned to design the transformation of the former St. Jacobusklooster on the Broekhovenseweg in Tilburg. The monastery for the sisters of the most sacred heart of Jesus (sisters of Moerwijk) offers the possibility to accommodate 33 apartments of approximately 50 m2 with an extension in the monastery garden.
The design concept is based on the preservation of the existing monastery, with the new building strengthening its structure and appearance. The sobriety and clear form language will be expressed in an unambiguous main volume, with references to the religious past. A noise-free monolithic façade with housing access will be created along the Ringbaan Zuid, in order to optimize the living pleasure towards the back side. Between the monastery and the new building a clear cut is made between old and new, in this mainly transparent connection the main access to both parts of the building will be situated.
